Those who came before us

Dear Journal

It's taken years to raise my village up from poverty to a thriving city. I've started to have some money left over on the budget and while some buildings are in need of upgrades, I decided to indulge my fetich for archaeology.

A while ago some of my prospectors found a strange cave a few cities away. I think I'm going to send some of my best archaeologists from the university to investigate. I hope the neighboring village won't mind me digging a bit around. It's not like they have laid claim to the area or anything.

...

It's been a week since they started digging. Jahmryn, my head archaeologist, has radioed in that they have found something strange. Evidently it started out as a regular cave, but the walls become smooth and featureless further in. The bottom is filled with water, which they are draining now. I find it strange that the walls are smooth. I wonder what could be down there. Is it an old bomb shelter?

...

A few days have passed and I haven't heard from Jahmryn since yesterday. I hope everything is ok.

...

I still haven't heard anything. I'm going to send a scout out there to ask Jahmryn to report in.

...

Oh, my gods! The scout reported back that half the dig team were lying dead on the ground inside the cave. They'd been shot with some kind of energy weapon. We don't know anyone who has such weaponry. The other half of the dig team must have fled, but Jahmryn wouldn't just run?! The scout did not dare go further in. I'm sending a special military team to handle this.

...

Archtac, the team leader, has reported back. The remaining part of the dig team and Jahmryn have not been found yet. Archtac reports that the cave ends in a chamber with what appears to be a closed doorway. Jahmryn's team must have found a way to open it, but triggered some sort of defence mechanism. I've ordered Archtac to try to get it open, but also added a 'be careful'.

...

Amazing news! After a month of trial and error, Archtac has reported that they have finally managed to open the doorway. It only took 14 different destroyed drones to understand how the defence mechanism worked. It seems to be very advanced, but also susceptible to intense microwave radiation. The 15th drone managed to fry it to a crisp.

The team went in and has deduced that the structure appears to be a space ship. Incredible! The puzzeling part is that carbon dating says that some of the parts are only about 20 years old?! However the materials also contains elements we do not know. It is possible it does not originate from our planet. In that case, carbon dating will provide a false reading. It may be older still.

Oh, the team also found Jahmryn dead in what is probably the bridge. It seems he triggered the defence mechanism and that is what got the outside team killed. The other team members must have starved to death. They were lying scattered around the inside of the ship. If only we could have gotten in sooner, they might still have been alive. Jahmryns loss is a great one. He was one of my best archaeologists.

...

I've sent a science team to the site. Archtac is keeping the site secured and as low key as possible. The neighboring cities have not yet discovered what has happened there, and I prefer to keep it that way. I have to find a way to dig out the ship and bring it back here. Archtac says the ship appears to be fairly large, so it may be hard to get it here unnoticed.

I wonder what technology we can get from this. Jahmryns sacrifice will not be in vain.
